The Full Monty To Close Early

It’s had brilliant reviews, an Olivier Award nomination and it promises male nudity, so the news that The Full Monty is closing after just one month is a major bombshell.

Simon Beaufoy’s beloved story about unemployed steelworkers turned-strippers opened at the Noël Coward Theatre in February to rave reviews. Originally due to run until mid-June, the production was handed its two weeks notice after Saturday night’s performance, despite earning an Olivier nomination for Best New Comedy on Monday.

Kenny Doughty who plays the leading role of Gaz took to his Facebook page to deliver the news:

I’m devastated and heart broken. Yesterday, on the day we had 2 full houses and 2 standing ovations. In the week our play got an Olivier nomination we were given the shocking news that the play is being pulled. We were summoned to a full company call on stage immediately after curtain call – you could still hear the whoops and cheers from the audience behind the curtain as the producer gave us our 2 weeks notice. I am utterly devastated not only for myself but for every single soul that has given their all for this play. I am so incredibly proud of this play and everybody in the Full Monty company. We delivered night after night. The audiences loved it. We got amazing reviews. An Olivier nomination. So it’s with a heavy heart that I announce that the final show of The Full Monty in the West End will be Saturday 29th March. We deserved better.

The announcement has sparked outrage in the Twittersphere with a petition having been started to keep the show until its original end date. A reason for the show’s early closure is still unknown.
