Superstars 2012: Interview with Michael Jamieson

Sixteen of Britain's London 2012 Olympic heroes compete to be crowned the two best all-round Superstars.

What appealed to you about taking part in Superstars?
It’s a great show with a great legacy! There’s always an amazing calibre of athlete taking part – I’m just delighted to be involved!

Were you already familiar with the show from previous series?
Yes, I’ve watched it over the years. I think most athletes are fans of the show. It’s got a great history & there are some impressive records! Everyone knows about Brian Jacks famous gym test scores in 1979, it was amazing!

Which event are you most looking forward to?
I think the mountain bike race will be interesting but there’s so much prestige in the gym tests! It’s to be crowned the best all round athlete and I think it will get very competitive.

Are there any of the events that you are apprehensive about taking part in?
Paddling the kayak in a straight line will be my biggest challenge I think but the javelin and archery events should provide a few laughs too.

What training have you undertaken to prepare for it?
I’m back in full training in the pool at the moment, we have the World Short Course Champs in December so we are doing around 30-35 hours in the pool & gym so there hasn’t been much room for the other sports as yet. I’m hoping to squeeze some in over the coming weeks!

Do you have any superstitions or rituals that you’ll want to do before each of the events?
It looks like a tough schedule over the weekend so the most important thing will be recovering between events. I’m not superstitious but swimmers don’t usually function well on land so I’ll need a thorough warm-up before some of the new events.

Superstars will be shown over Christmas. What are your own Christmas TV favourites? And what are your plans for this Christmas?
Home Alone is my favourite Christmas movie – it never gets old. I’ll be heading back to Glasgow for Christmas. Usually we have Christmas Eve through to Boxing Day off but I’m hoping my coach reads this and gives me a few extra days!
