Superstars 2012: Interview with Lizzie Armitstead

Sixteen of Britain's London 2012 Olympic heroes compete to be crowned the two best all-round Superstars.

What appealed to you about taking part in Superstars?
The opportunity to compete against other Olympians from other sports which I think is great and obviously something that we never get to do.

Which event are you most looking forward to?
The Kayak challenge sounds like it could be good fun and it’s an opportunity to try something new and very different from what I normally do.

Are there any of the events that you are apprehensive about taking part in?
The gym tests without a doubt. I have no upper body strength as it’s not really needed for cycling so this could be a bit embarrassing. I suppose kayaking could also fall into this category but I think that will be fun so I’m looking forward to that.

What training have you undertaken to prepare for it?
I've started back training on the bike but that is it. I’m not sure what the crossover will be from cycling fitness to the specific skills required for each of these events but hopefully it’ll be enough to be competitive or at least not make a fool of myself.

Do you have any superstitions or rituals that you’ll want to do before each of the events?
I always wear new socks before each race so I may want to put on new socks before each challenge. We’ll see…

Superstars will be shown over Christmas. What are your own Christmas TV favourites? And what are your plans for this Christmas?
Well I’m usually with the rest of the family and they prefer to watch the classic Christmas telly things such as Top of the Pops, the Queens speech, maybe a James Bond film if it is on; nothing in particular. We do have a family tradition however as on Boxing Day we usually go on a fun run which has been known to get somewhat competitive!
