Superstars 2012: Interview with Katherine Grainger

Sixteen of Britain's London 2012 Olympic heroes compete to be crowned the two best all-round Superstars.

What appealed to you about taking part in Superstars?
I competed in the 2004 show and I have fantastic memories of taking part. I met the most wonderful group of athletes including Gail Emms, Denise Lewis, Georgina Harland and Helen Reeves all of whom I’ve kept in touch with since the show. It was fiercely competitive but ridiculous amounts of fun too as we all managed to laugh at ourselves.

Which event are you most looking forward to?
It’s hard to tell – some of the fun ones are the ones you’ve never tried before like archery. Hope I don’t shoot anyone….

Are there any of the events that you are apprehensive about taking part in?
Well none of them are really any form of normal training for me, so they are going to be a challenge! Especially as my amount of training since the Olympics has been massively reduced, so I think it’s going to be painful!

What training have you undertaken to prepare for it?
The toughest thing is because I’m not training with the squad I don’t have a disciplined schedule, so all my good intentions currently get taken over by trying to keep up with the post-2012 life.

Do you have any superstitions or rituals that you’ll want to do before each of the events?
No, I’ve generally tried to avoid rituals. In rowing I try to go through in my mind what I need to do to perform but with all of these events I have no real idea, so it may just be moments of terror instead!

Superstars will be shown over Christmas. What are your own Christmas TV favourites? And what are your plans for this Christmas?
I absolutely love Christmas – for me it’s a real home time, so I’ll be with my family, feet up in front of the fire, enjoying all the lovely things that Christmas brings.
