Shane Allen to join BBC as Controller, Comedy Commissioning

The BBC today announces the appointment of Shane Allen as Controller, Comedy Commissioning.

Comedy is my life's passion, so this is a dream job and the best gig in TV comedy given the BBC's unique volume, range, commitment and legacy.
Shane Allen
Since October 2009, Shane has been Head of Comedy at Channel 4, where his commissions have included: Black Mirror; Derek; Facejacker; the BAFTA-nominated Friday Night Dinner & Comic Strip Presents: The Hunt For Tony Blair; Cardinal Burns. He has also overseen the continued runs of the BAFTA-winning IT Crowd and Peep Show.

Prior to this he was Commissioning Editor, Comedy, at Channel 4 where he commissioned Star Stories; Fonejacker; Dead Set; series two and three of The Inbetweeners; and PhoneShop.

Before this he worked freelance on a variety of programmes including The 11 O'Clock Show (Producer), The Brass Eye Special (Writer/AP), Ali G in Da USAiiii (Director), Shooting Stars (Writer); The State We’re In (Producer); and Union Jack (Series Producer). Shane was also Executive Producer on The Inbetweeners Movie, the biggest UK funded comedy film of all time.

Shane will be based in London as part of the team delivering a pan-UK comedy strategy across TV, radio and online.

Shane said: “Comedy is my life's passion, so this is a dream job and the best gig in TV comedy given the BBC's unique volume, range, commitment and legacy. It's the perfect time to join as Cheryl Taylor leaves behind a string of big audience delivering hit shows across all the channels, and George Entwistle is a very keen and inspiring champion of comedy on his new watch. I feel proud to leave Channel 4 comedy in rude health and end on a high with the Funny Fortnight season."

Roger Mosey, Acting Director of BBC Vision, added: “I’m delighted by Shane’s appointment. He has a great track record in the industry and we’re pleased he’s joining the BBC to make sure that we continue to offer original and distinctive comedy to our television audiences.”
